In her 20 years as a hairdresser, Laila Pettersen has worked for Nikita Hair, the biggest hairdressing chain in the Nordics, managing one of the biggest salons and as a Creative Director. At Wella she started as an educator before landing her current position.
Para aquellos que no te conocen, ¿Cómo te describirías a ti misma?
Soy trabajadora y muy competitiva, pero también muy consciente de mi entorno y de mis compañeros. A menudo antepongo a los demás antes que a mí, ¡lo cual puede ser tanto bueno como malo!
Mi lado creativo es muy fuerte y siempre tengo un millón de proyectos revoloteando en mi cabeza. ¡En el salón soy la que anda con 5 boles de colorines y tinte por todas partes! ¡Me encanta traspasar los límites y vivo por y para la innovación y las nuevas tecnologías!
For those who don’t know you, how would you describe yourself?
I am hardworking and very competitive, but also very aware of my surroundings and my coworkers. I often put others before myself, which can be both good and bad!
My creative side is very strong, and I always have a million projects flying through my head. In the salon I am the one with 5 colour bowls and haircolor everywhere! I love to push boundaries, and I live for innovation and new technology!
¿Cuándo supiste que querías ser peluquera? ¿Cómo fueron tus primeros pasos en esta industria?
Nunca estuvo en mi lista de opciones profesionales, pero lo que tenía claro era que quería hacer algo creativo, siempre he tenido un pincel en la mano la mayor parte de mi vida.
Durante dos años fui a la escuela de arte. Después de que vi que tendría que mudarme a otra ciudad para convertirme en diseñadora de interiores, busqué otras opciones y la peluquería me pareció interesante. La primera vez que sostuve un par de tijeras supe que esta era la elección correcta, ¡y no me he arrepentido ni una vez!
When did you know you wanted to be a hairdresser? How were your first steps in this industry?
It was never on my list of career choices, but what was certain was that I wanted to do something creative since I’ve had a paint brush in my hand most my life.
For two years I went to art school. After it became apparent that I had to move to a different city to continue on my path to become an interior designer, I looked for other opportunities, and hairdressing looked interesting. The first time I held a pair of scissors I knew that this was the right choice, and I haven’t looked back once!
¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas de ser peluquera?
Ser creativa; ¡el cabello es un lienzo increíble para trabajar! ¡Crear un look que enamore al cliente / modelo, poder cambiar la vida de una persona solo con un nuevo color y corte! Y me encanta trabajar con personas y toda la psicología que hay detrás.
What do you enjoy the most about being a hairdresser?
Being creative; hair is an amazing canvas to work with! Creating a look for the client/model that they love, being able to change a person’s life just by a new haircolour and cut! And I love working with people, and the psychology behind it.

¡¡Definitivamente el morado!! ¡Me encanta el morado! Y trabajar con su cabello (el de la modelo) es simplemente increíble, ¡sale perfecto haga lo que le haga!
Your Instagram feed is full of awesome color inspiration, if you had to choose one, what color would it be?
Oh definitely the purple one!! I am a sucker for purple! And her hair (model’s hair) is just amazing to work with, it comes out perfect no matter what I do to it!

¡Cuando conseguí el trabajo en Wella! Mi sueño ha sido convertirme en educadora desde que tengo uso de razón, así que cuando ese sueño se cumplió, ¡estaba en la luna!
Tell us about your happiest moment as a hairdresser!
When I got the job at Wella! It had been my dream of mine to become an educator for as long as I can remember, so when that dream came through I was over the moon!
¿Cómo o dónde te ves dentro de 5 años?
Definitivamente estaré en la industria, ¿tal vez trabajando para el equipo global de Wella?
Siempre estoy abierta a nuevas posibilidades para desarrollar mi carrera. Me encanta el lado educativo de la industria de la peluquería, y también la cantidad de personas a las que se puede llegar a través de las redes sociales, así que seguiré por ese camino. ¡Mi deseo es llegar a ser creadora de contenido a tiempo completo!
How or where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I am definitely still in the industry, maybe I am working for the Wella global team?
I am always open to new possibilities in regards to developing my career. I love the education side of the hairdressing industry, and also how many more people one can reach through social media, so I am going full steam ahead with that. My hope is to one day be a full time content creator!
¿Cómo ves la figura de la mujer en esta industria? ¿Crees que es importante que las jóvenes que están estudiando peluquería ahora mismo tengan referentes femeninos?
¡Hay muchísimas mujeres con talento y cada vez son más las que están llegando a primera línea, lo que creo que es increíble! Es muy importante que nos animemos y nos fortalezcamos mutuamente. Recuerda que la victoria de alguien no es tu pérdida, hay que sentirse felices por el éxito de las demás, ¡así el éxito también te llegará a ti!
Mi consejo para las peluqueras emergentes es que tengan la mente abierta, que sean tenaces, que exploren y experimenten, y que no tengan miedo al fracaso. Así es como se aprende a ser mejor. Sé amable siempre y trata bien a la gente, ¡te llevará lejos!
How do you see the figure of women in this industry? Do you think it is important that the young women who are studying hairdressing right now have female references?
There are so many talented women out there and more and more are coming to the forefront which I think is amazing! It is so important that we cheer and build eachother up. Someone’s win is not your loss, remember that, and continue to be happy for others success, this way success will come to you too!
My advice to up and coming hairdressers is to have an open mind, be tenacious, always explore and experiment and don’t be afraid of failure. It is how you learn the best. And always be kind and treat people well, it will get you far!
